The Dave McMurdo Quintet
featuring
Mike Malone
Discography
This exciting small group has been together since early 1998 when it made it's debut in a small restaurant in  Hamilton, Ontario. This is a  band with an especially  different front line of trombone and flugelhorn that when matched with guitar creates a  warm, lustrous sound.  It has evolved in a totally natural way out of the long standing  musical partnership  of it's leader Dave McMurdo  and Mike Malone.  Since 1988 this partnership has manifested itself through numerous recordings and tours with the 19 - piece Juno nominated Dave McMurdo Jazz Orchestra.  They  released their first CD in August 2000,  and did a Tour of the West Coast of Canada in September of the same year.  In 2001 & 2002 they  were featured at the Downtown Toronto Jazz Festival. They performed concerts in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in July 2001. In March 2005 The Quintet represented Canada at a cultural exchange in Tijuana Mexico.  Since it's inception the Quintet has performed regularly at The Montréal Bistro in Toronto.

Here are short bios of the group's members:

Dave McMurdo - trombonist/arranger/composer/jazz educator.  Dave is originally from Vancouver and has resided for the past 30 years in the Toronto area ( in Eden Mills since 1998 ),  where he performed as lead trombonist with Nimmons 'N' Nine Plus Six and as a featured player with  Rob McConnell and The Boss Brass.  Since 1988 he has lead the internationally acclaimed Dave McMurdo Jazz Orchestra.

Mike Malone - flugelhorn & trumpet/arranger/composer/ jazz educator.  Mike is originally from Sault Ste. Marie.  He is  in demand as both a player and composer/arranger.  Besides being featured in Dave's Jazz Orchestra he has also performed with The Alex Dean Quintet, The Ted Moses Group and Nimmons 'N' Nine Plus Six.

Reg Schwager - guitar, is originally from Sudbury.  Reg is a brilliant player as well as fine composer for both large and small ensembles.  He is currently  performing with  George Shearing in  his small group.  He often performs with his own trio as well as with Don Thompson and of course is a key member of The DMJO.

Pat Collins - bass,  is originally  from The West Coast and has lived  in the  Toronto area for 15 years.  He is among the premiere, in demand bass players in Canada and has performed in concert with Oscar Peterson amongst many other international jazz stars.  Pat brings his musicality and wit along with some wonderful bass solos to The DMQ.

Kevin Dempsey - drums,  is originally from Waterdown, Ontario.  He is a musical force to be reckoned with whether in an explosive manner with The Dave McMurdo Jazz Orchestra ( of which he is a charter member ) or as an exquisite purveyor of colour and groove  in a small group.  He like Pat  Collins is in constant demand as a beautifully well rounded player of all kinds of good music.
